Ingredients:
- 2 ¼ cups flour
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons cold butter, diced
- 3 ounces cold cream cheese, diced
- ½ cup sour cream
- ½ cup buttermilk (plus more for brushing)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract
- Buttermilk Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar & 2-3 tablespoons buttermilk
- Mardi Gras colored sugars
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl whisk flour, sugar, baking powder & salt. Use a pastry blender to cut in the butter and cream cheese until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In a small bowl whisk sour cream, buttermilk, & extracts. Add to flour mixture. Combine until a sticky dough forms (I used my Kitchen Aid mixer with the dough hook for this part).
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead lightly 4-5 times. Use a rolling pin to roll into a circle 1” thick. Cut wedges from dough and place on baking sheet. Brush with additional buttermilk. Bake 20 minutes. Let cool completely.
To make glaze whisk the powdered sugar & buttermilk. Pour over scones. Top with Mardi Gras colored sugars.
